PC Upsets Creighton in Big East Tournament UPDATED

The Providence College men’s basketball team defeated Creighton 78-73 at Madison Square Garden Thursday night.

PC is the #7 seed in the Big East Tournament, and Creighton is the #2.

The Friars were led by Devin Carter’s 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Josh Oduro, despite four troubles, added 17 points.

And Jayden Pierre added 15 points.

PC will play Marquette on Friday night at 8 PM. The Golden Eagles defeated Villanova Thursday night 71-65. The loss by Villanova, in all likelihood, ended their chance at an NCAA bid and bolstered PCs.

The Friars led at half-time 33-30 behind Carter’s 11 points and had 7 rebounds.

Creighton only shot 26% from the field in the first half.

 

Second Half

The Friars were up 57-46 at the 12 minute in the second half.

Later, Creighton went on a 7-0 run to cut PC’s lead to 61-58. PC called a timeout at the 7:11 mark.

Another Creighton run put the Blue Jays up 64-63 with 5:37 left.

The game bounced back and forth.

Jayden Pierre kept PC in the game with 7 straight for PC.

With 1:58, the Friars led 72-68. Carter hit a layup and then extended to 74-68 with 54 seconds off an Oduro bank shot.

Castro then fouled Ashworth, and he scored and hit the free-throw, cutting PC’s lead to 74-71.

At: :44, Carter then went to the line to shoot one and one and hit both. Friars 76-71

More Carter free-throws and the Friars were up 78-71.

•This is the first time a seventh seed has qualified for the BIG EAST Semifinals since 2017.

• The Friars secured their sixth Quad 1 victory of the season tonight.

•PC captured the Big east Tournament title in 1994 and 2014.

•PC has posted a 27-40 mark all-time in the Big East Tournament.

•The Friars have now posted a 3-2 mark versus Creighton in the BIG EAST Tournament.

•Carter is the eighth PC player to capture the Big East scoring title (21.4 ppg in 20 league contests).

• The Friars are 20-2 this season when scoring 71 or more points.

• The Friars are 16-1 this season when leading at halftime.

• The Friars are 18-1 when outrebounding opponents this season.

NEXT

The Friars will advance to the Big East Semifinals. They will face the winner of the No.3-Seed and No.10/10-ranked Marquette, against the No.6-Seed Villanova. The Semifinal match will held at the Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. on FS1.
