Red Sox Fall to Oakland 8-3 in Velazquez's Major League Debut

Oakland's Sonny Gray strikes out 8 in win.
Hector Velazquez made his major league debut for the Red Sox and gave up six runs on 9 hits in Boston’s 8-3 loss to the Oakland A’s on Thursday night in Oakland. 

Velazquez, who played his first seven years as a pro in the Mexican League was making the start in place of Drew Pomeranz who left his last start with an injury. 

With the loss, the Red Sox fall to 21-19 on the season.

Oakland Grabs Control in 4th 

After the Red Sox tied the game at 3 in the fourth inning, on a solo home run from Mitch Moreland Oakland seized control of the game for good. 

Oakland’s Trevor Plouffe hit an RBI double to give the A’s the lead back at 4-3. 

Chad Pinder followed that up with a two-run homer on the very next pitch to make it 6-3.

The A’s would add two runs in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. 

Oakland starter Sonny Gray gave up only four hits and stuck out eight en route to his first win of the season.

The series continues on Friday, May 19 with first pitch set for 9:35 p.m. 

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Chris Sale against Oakland’s Kendall Graveman.
