Young's RBI Single Lifts Red Sox Over Cardinals 5-4 in 13 Innings

Chris Young's RBI single wins game for Red Sox
Chris Young hit an RBI single to centerfield in the top of the 13th inning to give the Red Sox a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night in St. Louis. 

In the bottom of the 13th Ben Taylor came on to pitch for the Red Sox and got the Cardinals in order for his first major league save. He was the 8th pitcher used by the Red Sox in the game. 

Boston swept the two-game series with the Cardinals and improved to 21-18 on the season.

Red Sox Come Back

The Red Sox trailed 4-0 in the seventh inning against Cardinals' pitcher Mike Leake, who had only given up five hits to that point. 

Jackie Bradley jr. got the Red Sox on the board with a two-run home run, scoring Mitch Moreland to cut the Cardinals' lead to 4-2. The home run was Bradley's second in two games and fourth of the season. 

Boston would tie the game at four in the 8th when Dustin Pedroia drew and walk and Xander Bogaerts followed up with an RBI triple to pull the Red Sox within one. 

Bogaerts would score on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Benintendi to tie the game at 4. 

The teams would combine for a total of two hits until Young's heroics the 13th inning won the game for Boston. 

Next up 

The Red Sox return to action on Thursday, May 18 when they visit the Oakland A’s. First pitch is set for 10:05 p.m. 

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Hector Velázquez against Oakland’s Sonny Gray.
