Russell Doesn't Play, Rams Offense Goes Cold in 60-53 Loss to St. Louis

Rams fall to Saint Louis
With Fatts Russell out of the lineup, the University of Rhode Island Rams men’s basketball team fell 60-53 on the road to Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon in their A-10 opener.

Russell missed the game after suffering a concussion in practice earlier this week.

He is currently in concussion protocol. It is unclear when he will return.

In Russell's place, freshman Tyrese Martin made his first career start and led the Rams with 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field.

The loss drops Rhode Island to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in the A-10.

Saint Louis improves to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in A10 play.

The Billikens were picked as the preseason favorite to win the conference.

Rams Offense Goes Cold

Trailing 36-34 with 16 minutes to play in the game, URI went on a 9-1 run capped off by a Dana Tate layup to take a 43-37 lead with 12:15 left to play.

From there, Saint Louis would go on a run of their own.

Sparked by a three from Javon Bess, the Billikens went on a 13-2 run to take a 50-45 lead following a KC Hankton free throw with 8:49 left in the game.

The Rams would get back within two, 53-51, on a three from Jeff Dowtin with 7 minutes to play, but would not get any closer.

Dowtin’s three would be URI’s last field goal of the game as the Rams would miss their final seven shots.

URI's two other points would come on two Dowtin free throws with two minutes left to play to make the score 57-53.

However, Saint Louis would close the game on a 7-2 run to take the 60-53 win.

Dowtin finished the game with 11 points on 2 of 10 shooting from the field and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Rhode Island shot 34% from the field for the game.

Thompson Fouls Out

With Russell not playing, the Rams were short on depth at the guard position.

Their depth was further hurt when guard Christion Thompson fouled out of the game with 8:45 to go.

Thompson entered the second half with only one personal foul. He then went on to pick up three fouls in the first five minutes of the half.

He picked up his final foul with 8:45 to play and was replaced by Jermaine Harris.

Thompson finished the game with five points.
