Russell Returns, URI Beats Richmond 78-67 to Even A-10 Record

Fatts Russell returns to the URI lineup.
Fatts Russell poured in 19 points in his return to the URI lineup as the Rams cruised past Richmond 78-67 on Wednesday night.

Russell missed URI’s previous game after suffering a concussion in practice last week.

He played 34 minutes in his return. The win was a much of a must-win game as a team can have early in the conference schedule as coach David Cox tries to establish this year's Ram team. Cox took over for Dan Hurley who led the team to back-to-back NCAA tournament bids and then left for a higher paying and higher profile University of Connecticut job.

The win evens URI’s conference record at 1-1 and improves them to a disappointing 8-6 overall.

Richmond falls to 0-2 in the A-10 and 6-9 overall.

Rams Hot Start

Rhode Island got off to a hot start in the game, jumping out to a 13-5 lead on a layup by Russell with 16 minutes to play in the first half.

The Spiders would climb back into the game, cutting URI’s lead to four, 28-24,  with 7:23 to play in the half following a three from Jacob Gilyard.

From that point, the Rams would go on an 11-4 run capped off by a three from Jeff Dowtin to take a 39-28 lead with 2:25 to play in the half.

Richmond would get back within seven, 41-34, with 1:26 to play before a three by Tyrese Martin give the Rams a ten point half time lead at 44-34.

The Rams went 16 of 26 from the field in the half for a shooting percentage of 61.5, marking their best shooting half of the season.

In the second half, Rhode Island would push their lead to as many as 19 points on a free throw by Dowtin with 11:59 left to play in the game.

The Spiders would cut URI’s lead to ten points on two different occasions, but would not get any closer.

The Rams went the final four minutes of the game without scoring a field goal, but got seven points from the free throw line to secure the win.

Dowtin led the Rams with 24 points, while Martin followed up with ten points.
