URI Basketball Gets Commitment from Forward Jacob Toppin

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team announced that forward Jacob Toppin has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the program for the 2019-20 season.

Toppin made the announcement on his Instagram on Friday night. 

"Jacob is a big-time shooter with great size and length to go with a tremendous skill set. This is a young man with a high IQ who comes in with a strong basketball pedigree. Jacob has a high ceiling with the potential to have a tremendous impact on our program,” said head coach David Cox.

Toppin was also recruited cry Oklahoma State, St. John’s, Virginia Tech and Dayton.

About Toppin

Toppin is a 6’7” forward from Ossining, N.Y.

He spent a post-graduate season playing for nationally ranked Woodstock Academy.

He is the younger brother of Dayton star Obi Toppin, who was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year this past season.

URI in 2019-20

Toppin joins forwards  Marial Mading and Mekhi Long, as well as guard Gregory Hammond as part of the 2019-20 class.

The Rams also have added transfers Antwan Walker - a redshirt sophomore forward from Georgetown - and Jeremy Sheppard - a junior guard from the College of Central Florida for this season.

The Rams have one open scholarship for the upcoming season.
