URI Basketball Looks Fragile —  Loses to GW, Now 3-3 in Last 6 Games

The University of Rhode Island entered the game Wednesday night against George Washington University looking far more mortal than it did after its 9-0 start.

The Rams have been herky-jerky since then. The win over Providence College was followed by a loss to Brown University.

Then, solid wins over Central Connecticut State University and Temple also came with a painful loss at Duquesne on the road.

The Rams bounced back with a last-second win over George Mason on Saturday, and then GW came to the Ryan Center.

The inconsistencies continued.

The Rams lost to the Revolutionaries 75 to 67 on Wednesday.

The Rams fall to 12-3 (1-2 in the Atlantic-10) and the Revolutionaries are now 13-3 (2-1).

GW went up 48-38 with 15:00 left in the game.

Then, it looked like the Rams might be saved when guard Sebastian Thomas sparked a big comeback. The Rams went off on a 13-2 run and tied the game at 55-55.

Thomas scored 6 of those points.

GW and URI battled back and forth, and at 6:36, the game was tied yet again at 59-59.

The Rams then went ice cold from the field — no field goals for 5 minutes, which allowed GW to go on a 6-0 run.

There were no last-minute heroics this time. The Revolutionaries finished off the Rams.

The Rams were led by Thomas with 20 points but shot just 6-16 from the field. Former Friar Rafael Castro led the Revolutionaries with 16 points.

Editor's Note: A previous article identified GW by its previous mascot, the Colonials. The school has since changed its mascot to the Revolutionaries.
