URI Bounces Back With 75-61 Win Over Charlotte

The University of Rhode Island Rams defeated the Charlotte 49ers 75-61 on Sunday night in the second game of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii.

The Rams improve to 6-4 on the season, while Charlotte falls to 3-7 overall.

After leading by as much as 20 points midway through the first half, the Rams saw their lead cut to nine points, 37-28, at the half.

URI opened the game on a 25-5 run due to hot shooting by Jeff Dowtin and Fatts Russell.

However, Charlotte closed the half on a 17-6 run to close the gap at the break.

In the second half, the 49ers got to within five, 41-36, on a Jon Davis layup with 16:41 to play in the game.

From that point, URI went on an 8-1 run capped off by a three from Christian Thompson three and a Cyril Langevine free throw to go up 49-37 with 13:23 to play.

However, the 49ers would not go away.

They would again get within five, 49-44, on a Malik Martin layup with 11:38 to play in the game, but again the Rams would answer.

Rhode Island would go on a quick 7-2 run to push their lead back up to 56-46 on a Dowtin layup with 7:07 left.

The 49ers would get within five one more time, 58-53, before URI would seal the game with a 13-0 run capped off by a Russell three and then four straight free throws by Russell and Langevine.

The Rams shot 85% from the free throw line in the game, just one night after shooting only 50% in a two-point loss to Bucknell.

Russell led URI with 20 points on 5 of 16 shooting from the field, while Dowtin followed up with 15 points.

Langevine contributed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Rams return to action on Christmas Day when they take on Hawaii.
