URI Bounces Back With 75-63 Win Over St. Bonaventure

One game after head coach David Cox called their effort “embarrassing,” the URI Rams men’s basketball team bounced back with a 75-63 win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.

“I thought that was Rhode Island basketball right there. We defended at an elite level in the first half holding them to 20 points and six made field goals. That was the difference in the game,” said Cox after the game.

The win improves the Rams to 9-7 on the season and 2-2 in the A-10.

The Bonnies fall to 6-11 overall and 2-2 in the A-10.

Strong 1st Half Leads to Win

After trailing by as much as 12-4 early in the first half, URI trailed 18-16 with 5:26 left to play in the half.

From that point, URI got two free throws and a three from Tyrese Martin to help spark an 18-2 run to take a 34-20 lead at the break.

The run was capped off a three from Christion Thompson and a half-ending dunk from Jeff Dowtin.

On the other end of the floor, the Rams defense held the Bonnies to just 24% shooting.

By comparison, Rhode Island shot 52% from the field in the half.

URI knocked down three shots from deep in the half after making just three total shots from beyond the arc in their last game.

In the second half, the Bonnies cut Rhode Island’s lead to 44-37 with 14 minutes to play in the game.

Both teams then went scoreless for about the next four minutes before URI went on a quick 5-1 run to go up 49-38 with 9 minutes left.

After the Bonnies got back within seven, 49-42, the Rams went on a 9-4 run capped off by a Martin layup to take a 58-46 lead with 4:56 to play.

The Bonnies would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Fatts Russell and Martin reached poured in 18 points to lead URI in the game.

As a team, Rhode Island shot 54% from the field in the game and 38% from three.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, January 19 when they visit La Salle.

Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
