URI Uses 2nd Half Rally to Beat La Salle 78-67

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team rallied from ten points down in the second half to beat the La Salle Explorers 78-67 on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The win is URI’s second straight and improves them to 3-2 in the A-10 and 10-7 overall.

“We’ve got to continue [winning]. Now that’s two. I’ll enjoy this one for the bus ride home and then we’ve got to turn the page quickly,” said Rhode Island head coach David Cox after the game.

La Salle falls to 3-14 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Rams Rally in 2nd Half

After trailing by two (33-31) at the half, URI found themselves down ten, 42-32, with 16:59 left to play.

From that point, URI went on a 14-1 run capped off by a Tyrese Martin layup to take a 46-43 lead with 12:27 to play in the game.

Rhode Island would build up a 14 point lead, 62-48, layup by Fatts Russell layup with 5:33 to go in the game.

La Salle would not get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

URI was led by Jeff Dowtin, who poured in 22 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field.

Cyril Langevine recorded his tenth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

"He [Langevine] kept us in the game, 13 and 8 in the first half, and we're down by two. Horrendous defensive first half once again, and he kept us in that game. He's just a warrior," said Cox.

URI returns to action on Wednesday, January 23 when they host VCU at the Ryan Center.

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
