NEW: URI Beats West Virginia 83-70 at Mohegan Sun

Jeff Dowtin leads URI to a win over West Virginia
The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team beat West Virginia 83-70 on Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena as part of the 2018 Air Force Reserve Holiday Showcase.

The win marks the biggest victory for first-year head coach David Cox, who has seen his team get off to a slow start this season.

The victory could also have NCAA implications.

If Rhode Island is on the bubble, a win over a Big 12 team on a neutral court could be what pushes them over the top.

Leading 63-62 with 8:21 left to play in the game, the Rams went on a 12-3 run capped off by a Tyrese Martin layup to take a 75-65 lead with 2:39 left in the game.

The Rams would go on a quick 6-0 run capped off by a Jeff Dowtin layup to give Rhode Island an 81-67 lead with 1:05 to play.

The Rams would go on to win 83-70.

Fatts Russell poured in 18 points, dished out five assists and grabbed six rebounds.

Rams Grab Lead at Break

With the game tied at 39 and 2:25 left in the half, Rhode Island got a three from Dowtin to take a 42-39 lead with 2:12 left.

West Virginia would get back within one, 42-41, on two free throws from Wesley Harris, before the Rams would get a three from Fatts Russell to push Rhode Island’s lead to 45-41 with 1:41 to play.

West Virginia’s Harris would get a dunk with just over a minute to play to close out the first half scoring.

The Rams, who have struggled offensively for the majority of the season, shot 45% from the field in the first half.
