Smart Benefits: Give Your Benefits a Boost

Discounts and gym memberships may not be enough anymore to entice workers. According to a Glassdoor survey, 57 percent of applicants rank benefits among their top considerations when looking for a job and nearly 80 percent of workers would prefer new or additional benefits to a pay increase. That’s why some companies are raising the bar with unique benefits to drive interest and loyalty among would-be and current employees, respectively.

To get inspiration for your program, consider what some leading organizations are offering.

  • Full Tuition Reimbursement. Starbucks has pioneered a program with Arizona State University to offer part- and full-time employees full tuition coverage for every year of college to earn a bachelor’s degree online.
  • Free Food. In-n-Out Burger offers part- and full-time employees free meals on work days while Lucidsoftware offers free pizza, rooftop BBQs and a stocked kitchen.
  • On-Site Salon and Spa Services. To help employees manage their busy lives, Dropbox offers haircuts on site as does Genentech. Scripps provides free, on-site massage therapy.
  • Play Time. REI offers all employees one day off – called a Yay Day – every six months to go outside and play. Burton allows flexible hours so employees can ride before work in the winter.  And Grasshoppper has half-day Fridays in the summer.
  • Flip-Flop Friendly Dress Code. Acuity’s “Dress for your Day” dress code deems jeans, tees, athletic clothes, sneakers and flip flop among acceptable items for the workplace.
