Unemployment & Temporary Disability Insurance Rates Announced for 2017-18
The new unemployment and temporary disability insurance rates for 2017-18 have been announced by the Department of Labor and Training (DLT).

The maximum weekly benefit rate for Unemployment Insurance will stay at $566 per beneficiary and $707 with the maximum five dependents.

The new TDI maximum weekly benefit amount will be $831, an increase of $14 from the current rate of $817.

With the maximum five dependents the maximum weekly rate will be $1,121, an increase of $19 from the current rate of $1,102.

“Every June, per state law and before the start of the next program year, DLT computes the benefit rates for UI and TDI. State law sets the maximum UI and TDI rate based upon a percentage of the average weekly wage paid to eligible employees in the previous calendar year,” said DLT Director Scott Jensen.

The new rates will take effect on July 2, 2017.

Unemployment Insurance

Unemployment Insurance provides temporary income to those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own and who have enough wages  to meet the monetary requirements.

It is funded by the state and federal unemployment taxes paid by Rhode Island employers.

Last year, 33,400 employers supported unemployment insurance with almost $190 million in taxes and DLT handled more than 63,000 claims, disbursing close to $150 million in benefits.

Temporary Disability Insurance

Temporary Disability Insurance protects workers against wage loss due to a non-work related illness or injury, and through Temporary Caregiver Insurance (TCI), provides up to four weeks to bond with a new child or to care for a seriously ill family member.

Workers pay for Temporary Disability Insurance through a payroll tax.

Nearly 421,000 Rhode Island workers paid almost $190 million in TDI taxes in 2016 when DLT handled approximately 47,000 customer claims and paid out $172 million in TDI and TCI benefits.
