7 Things to Know About the Newest PawSox Public Financing Scheme

Literally dozens of financing schemes have been proposed over the past couple of years
It didn’t take long for another twist and turn to take place in the never-ending request by the ownership group of the Pawtucket Red Sox for taxpayer subsidies from the State of Rhode Island and the City of Pawtucket.

The group of owners, who all but one live outside of Rhode Island, represent some of the wealthiest men in New England, if not the United States. Their collective wealth is estimated at $8 to $10 billion.

Amazingly, the proposed public subsidy between the State of Rhode Island and the city of Pawtucket totals $38 million.

The latest version of the legislation was negotiated by Governor Gina Raimondo’s Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor and this time has her support.  This is a change from the previous proposal also negotiated by Pryor, Mayor Donald Grebien, and PawSox owners, but initially had the Governor’s support and then left her Commerce Secretary flapping in the wind and Grebien furious.

This legislation claims to have Pawtucket “backstopping” their own bonds and pledging their state and education aid to gaurantee the State’s commitment. But, that claim is anything from reality (See 7 Things to Know below).

Now Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello, who had taken the lead of the Providence-site proposal two years ago, said on Tuesday, “I have been clear that a bill on a Pawtucket Red Sox’ stadium would not be introduced until it had the Governor’s stamp of approval. Now that she has given the proposal her support, legislation will be introduced by the Pawtucket House delegation and it will be at the request of the Commerce Corporation, which the Governor chairs. This bill will be fully reviewed by the House Finance Committee this fall," Mattiello said in a statement.
