7 Things to Know About the Newest PawSox Public Financing Scheme

The group of owners, who all but one live outside of Rhode Island, represent some of the wealthiest men in New England, if not the United States. Their collective wealth is estimated at $8 to $10 billion.
Amazingly, the proposed public subsidy between the State of Rhode Island and the city of Pawtucket totals $38 million.

This legislation claims to have Pawtucket “backstopping” their own bonds and pledging their state and education aid to gaurantee the State’s commitment. But, that claim is anything from reality (See 7 Things to Know below).
Now Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello, who had taken the lead of the Providence-site proposal two years ago, said on Tuesday, “I have been clear that a bill on a Pawtucket Red Sox’ stadium would not be introduced until it had the Governor’s stamp of approval. Now that she has given the proposal her support, legislation will be introduced by the Pawtucket House delegation and it will be at the request of the Commerce Corporation, which the Governor chairs. This bill will be fully reviewed by the House Finance Committee this fall," Mattiello said in a statement.
