NEW: RI Building Trades Urge State Leaders To Support PawSox Deal

Michael Sabitoni (in a recent interview on GoLocal LIVE with Kate Nagle).
The President of the Rhode Island Building and construction trades council, Michael Sabitoni, is calling for State leaders to support the new Pawtucket ballpark proposal.

“I respectfully request that our elected officials give this proposal the immediate and urgent consideration it is due. This proposal will have a massive positive impact on construction jobs, the City of Pawtucket and the State of Rhode Island.  To lose this project and allow the PawSox to relocate to another out of state community would be a devastating legacy for our State," said Sabitoni.

The Rhode Island AFL-CIO and The Rhode Island Building & Construction Trades Council have unanimously endorsed the proposal.

On Monday, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo came out in support of the proposal, calling it a good deal.

"I do think it's a good deal for the taxpayers, from what I can tell. And I think as I said before, it's much, much better than last time,” said Raimondo.

On Tuesday, Senate President Dominick Ruggerio said that the PawSox deal is dead for this season.

“The Senate has not received any legislation from the Governor’s office or the Pawtucket Mayor’s office. At this point, it is too late in the session for a thorough, public review of a proposal of this magnitude. Should legislation be forthcoming, I am not opposed to reconvening in the fall to consider it in a deliberative and public manner.”

A GoLocal investigation found that despite almost $300 million in Stadium renovations across the International League, attendance has declined the past 10 years.
