Raimondo Calls PawSox $38 Million Ask a "Good Deal" for RI Taxpayers

Governor Gina Raimondo, following Monday's Commerce meeting.
Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo called the proposal put forth by the Pawtucket Red Sox ownership to finance a new stadium -  with at least $38 million of subsidies from the state - a "good deal" on Monday, while reserving final judgment before seeing any legislation submitted to the General Assembly.

Raimondo's remarks came following a meeting of the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation which saw the Commerce board approve tax increment financing and Rebuild RI Tax Credits for The Procaccianti Group's new hotel at the location of the old Fogarty Building in downtown Providence - as well as $2.2 million in incentives to bring Vistaprint to Rhode Island.

Following the meeting, Raimondo said that she is reserving judgment until she sees the final legislation submitted to the General Assembly -- which Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello said needs Raimondo's seal of approval before moving forward.

"First we have to see it [the legislation] then we'll go from there," said Raimondo. "I have not seen a draft. The framework as I understand it, I think is a good one."

New Year, New Deal

In 2015, when PawSox owners approached the 195 Commission with a pitch for a ballpark on the former highway land that would cost taxpayers $4 million a year, Raimondo immediately called the deal "unfair," ultimately derailing the efforts of the collective billionaire ownership to take the PawSox from Pawtucket to Providence.

Now, the ownership team -- who GoLocal reported in 2015 had given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Rhode Island officials - are asking for subsidies of at least $38 million, after having bought the team for $30 million, making the case that they are taking on more than fifty percent of the total construction costs, and spurring economic development.

"They're going to have to decide what they want to do and look at it on the merits," said Raimondo of the General Assembly once legislation is submitted, which is expected in the coming week.

"As I understand it, this is a top economic priority of the Mayor of Pawtucket and I support him in doing that - I do think it's a good deal for the taxpayers, from what I can tell," said Raimondo. "And I think as I said before, it's much, much better than last time."

"Look, this is a good thing for the taxpayers, it's a top priority for Pawtucket, I support all those efforts. Really, I have nothing more to say," added Raimondo."It's not a top priority of my administration. I've submitted other legislation, but I looked at it, and I think it's a good deal."

"[The Speaker has to] look at it and evaluate it on its merits, and if he comes to the conclusion its a good thing to do, I guess they'll go for it," said Raimondo. "The request they're asking is not unreasonable."

Lobbying Raimondo

While PawSox ownership and proponents have urged supporters to contact the Governor's office to ensure her support, opponents are undertaking their own effort.

An online petition was started for opponents to message Raimondo, which writes:

The Pawtucket Red Sox Organization is a highly successful, profitable private enterprise. Taxpayer money must NOT go to subsidizing their operations, or towards the purchase/construction/operation of a stadium, public or otherwise.

We demand full transparency in any negotiations, and taxpayer approval for any business relationship established at the expense of the State of Rhode Island
