RI Leaders Need to Come to One Table to Discuss PawSox: Guest MINDSETTER™ Billington

Larry Lucchino
A new stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox is an interesting proposal. It’s a proposal that we need to consider seriously; with all responsible parties at the same table at the same time.

The proposal has plenty of great opportunities for the city of Pawtucket and Rhode Island. Why we’re having such a hard time discussing the pros and cons of this proposal together is puzzling. You have to give Mayor Don Grebien and Pawtucket Red Sox Chairman Larry Lucchino credit. They have been laser-focused on what stadium proposal will make the most sense for Pawtucket.

I love strong leadership.  We have a difficult time finding it these days. Mayor Grebien is displaying leadership, character and thoughtful sensitivity to the city he represents. His alternative would be to keep his head down and play things safe.  But he’s not.  It’s important for Mayor Grebien to be pushing hard, with all parties, to make the stadium proposal work. That’s what leaders do. Grebien should be listened to, and supported, because he is trying to do something extraordinary.

Rhode Islander’s are skeptical by nature, and we should be. We have had our fair share of those who have taken advantage of our state, but we’ve also lost opportunities by being too critical and too cynical.

All business proposals have to be analyzed. All business is not necessarily good business. I thought the vetting of this proposal was behind us, obviously, it’s not.  Right now, you have a leader asking for “an honest discussion”. This is a phrase Mayor Grebien uses often.

Can we not listen to him and hash out what is good or bad about the proposal? If it’s a bad plan for Pawtucket, or Rhode Island, discuss it face to face. If this is the largest private investment the city of Pawtucket has seen, we need to listen and deliberate.

It is important that Mayor Grebien, Commerce RI, the Pawtucket Red Sox management, the Governor, the Speaker of the House, the President of the Senate and the Apex property owners discuss this proposal at one table.  In the end, if it is not the right proposal, amend it, negotiate, or secure other avenues to success.  Either way, our leadership will have done the people’s business, the way it should be done. The way we are doing business currently, is not helpful to a proposal that could positively change the life of people in America’s first industrial and first post-industrial city.  This could be the opportunity Pawtucket has been searching for.

One of Pawtucket’s brand strengths as a city, is wrapped in the Pawtucket Red Sox. The value of the team to Pawtucket is immense. To lose this brand would be detrimental. Companies fight for the brands they build, and protect them fiercely. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon said: “A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn a reputation by trying to do hard things well.”

Mayor Grebien is trying to do hard things well by protecting Pawtucket’s brand with intelligence and leadership. We owe him and Pawtucket a deliberative table discussion.
