Maj. Oates Leaves Prov Police to be Chief in Woonsocket

Major Thomas Oates III is leaving the Providence Police Department to be the new Chief of Police in Woonsocket. Oates will begin his role as soon as he is able to transition from his current responsibilities with the Providence Police.

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the men and women of the Woonsocket Police Department. I look forward to the establishing positive relationships within the Department and the community over the coming weeks as the new Chief of the Woonsocket Police Department,” said Oates. 

The announcement concludes the search for a new Woonsocket Chief which started in February, following the departure of Chief Thomas Carey.

Oates currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Providence Police Department where he has served for 36 years.  Oates has been in law enforcement for 42 years.  

As Police Chief in Woonsocket, Oates will oversee all aspects of the Woonsocket Police Department which includes 90 officers and 16 civilian staff.
