UPDATED: Newport Police Officers Assaulted - More Arrests Made

Newport Police announced that multiple police officers were assaulted responding to a call in the city on Tuesday. 

Police say four suspects were arrested and are being arraigned on charges on Wednesday.

About Incident 

According to police, officers responded to the Festival Field Housing Development in Girard Avenue shortly after 9 PM on Tuesday for a report of domestic violence crimes that had occurred. 

Police said that through their investigation, 28-year-old Angel Cruz Martinez of Newport was identified as the suspect and was wanted on Domestic Simple Assault, Domestic Disorderly Conduct, Vandalism and Larceny charges. 

Martinez was seen in the area a short time later, said police, and officers approached him and when they attempted to take him into custody, "he resisted their efforts by punching them and pushing away from them."

"While officers were struggling with Martinez, several bystanders began assaulting the officers by kicking and punching them," said Newport Police. "Shortly thereafter, multiple officers arrived on scene and immediately thwarted the attack on the two officers."

The two Newport Officers who were assaulted were taken to the Newport Hospital where they were treated and released with minor injuries.  

 

Suspects Charged 

According to Newport Police, in addition to the Domestic Violence charges, Martinez was also charged with Simple Assault and Resisting Arrest.  

Three other parties were taken into custody related to this incident: 39-year-old Jose Carreras of  Newport, (charged with Assault of a Police Officer, Simple Assault and Disorderly Conduct);  28-year-old Calvin Febles of Middletown, (charged with Disorderly Conduct and Obstructing an  Officer in the Execution of their Duty) and 37-year-old Jetsenia Luna Schmidt of Newport, (charged with Disorderly Conduct). 

 

More Arrests

 On April 30, 2025, three more people were arrested. 

According to Newport Police, 33-year-old Keyshla Cruz Martinez of Newport, 40-year-old Jose Cruz Ortiz of Newport and 27-year-old Mayra Custodio of Newport. All three were charged with Simple Assault, Obstruction of an Officer in the Execution of their Duty and Disorderly Conduct.
