The new numbers reported by the Rhode Island Department of Health show that the coronavirus is unimpeded — recording 1,280 new cases in one day.

And, hospitalizations jumped to 284 — up 19 in a single day.

At the rate of infection and hospitalizations, the RI’s hospital capacity will be overwhelmed in just two to three weeks.

Dr. Michael Fine issues a strong rebuke of Governor Gina Raimondo’s strategy that has failed to limit exposure as the numbers have increased at a rapid rate since mid-September.

“We need a new strategy — this one is clearly failed,” said Fine, the former RI Director of Health.

Most chilling is that the state has suffered 30 deaths in just the past 5 days.

Raimondo is scheduled to roll out new restrictions on Thursday, but Fine said the disease is now everywhere and the delays in taking action have allowed it to be “unchecked” and “rampant.”

On Tuesday, the United States recorded the highest number of deaths in 6 months -- 1,707.

Rhode Island continues to have the highest level of disease on the East Coast.
