RI Trucking Assoc. Refutes RIDOT's Defense for Placing Toll on Oxford Street Bridge

Chris Maxwell
The Rhode Island Trucking Association (RITA) is refuting the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s (RIDOT) defense and justification for placement of a truck-only toll at the Oxford Street Bridge in Providence.

“Claims of trucks doing all the damage and not paying their fair share are an affront to the integrity of our industry. The waste exposed at the Oxford Street Bridge, and more, RIDOT’s response to our allegations confirm that RhodeWorks is a sham and a shell game that will only serve to fleece the taxpayers of Rhode Island,” said RITA president Chris Maxwell.

This comes just a week after the RI Trucking Association called for an oversight committee to review the RhodeWorks project selection.

In response to RIDOT, RITA says the following:

  • RI has the greatest number of structurally-deficient bridges in the US and RI doesn’t have sufficient funding to replace or fix all of the bridges classified as structurally deficient.
  • An estimated 177 of the state’s bridges are classified as structurally deficient and most of them have a superstructure rating of 4 or less. Oxford is structurally sound with a 5 superstructure rating.
  • Why is RIDOT rehabilitating a bridge that’s in good condition with a superstructure rating of 5) when RI has so many structurally-deficient bridges that it deems “dangerous”?
  • Why replace the Oxford Street Bridge if it’s not structurally deficient? If it was rated a “4” and considered “dangerous,” why does RIDOT allow people to drive on any RI bridge that is rated structurally deficient?
  • It makes no sense to replace the superstructure without replacing the very old substructure too - it’s only a little bit more expensive to replace the entire bridge.
  • There’s absolutely no justification for saying a full replacement “in the future” would cost twice as much.

RITA Continues to Call for Oversight

The Rhode Island Trucking Association is continuing to call for immediate action and oversight over RIDOT on its bridge inspection procedures, selection of toll placement and spending related to RhodeWorks.

“RITA stands by its claim that gantry placement at this location is driven by revenue collection rather than a concern for public safety and efficiency,” said Maxwell.
