RIDOT's Alviti Says "Let Me Tell You Something Pal" to Constituent at Public Meeting

Rhode Island DOT Director Peter Alviti is caught on video letting loose at an audience member at a public hearing Monday night who asked a question about alternatives to the 6/10 Connector project.

This happened during a workshop in which the DOT invited the public to attend.

StopTollsRI has released a statement on what is shown in the video.

Public servants serve the public, at least in theory.  But when the DOT invites the public to a workshop, purportedly to gain input from the audience, see what happens. DOT director Alviti is asked a question from an audience member about alternatives to the 6/10 Connector ‘Big Dig’ project and the bullying tactics begin.

Over and over again, throughout the toll debate and now the ‘Big Dig’ debate, we have been witness to bullying and intimidation and it is clear that if you oppose the leadership, your input is not wanted.  Finance Chairman Gallison shut down Representative Morgan when she was asking questions of the DOT director about the toll legislation.  An unrelated meeting between the Town of Hopkinton and Speaker Mattiello was abruptly canceled because the town did not support tolls.  A number of representatives were removed from their committees because they voted against tolls.  And now, bullying from Governor Raimondo’s administration to shut down opponents of the 6/10 Connector ‘Big Dig’.

The DOT press release states that the administration has made a commitment to fix the interchange now and solve an urgent safety problem.  This $1 billion monstrosity is a far cry from fixing the safety problem. That same press release states that the “reimagined” 6/10 Connector boulevard hybrid will include a transit feature, add open space, pedestrian connections, and a bike path.  Is this ‘Big Dig' a nice-to-have or a necessary expense for Rhode Islanders?

There are two more “public workshop” if you would like to voice your opinion or ask questions about the largest project in RI’s history (remember, the IWAY only cost $610 million even though it handles 60% more traffic than the Connector does).
