About Incident

According to police, the operator of a Ford pick-up truck was driving on Pitman Street on the East Side of Providence after midnight Wednesday morning, when he collided with multiple vehicles parked on the street.

The truck ultimately collided with a house, causing it to come to a stop.

Police say a fire started in the truck and quickly spread; officers on the scene called the fire department but were forced to use a fire extinguisher to extricate the driver, who was unresponsive.

The driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and treated.

Police said that when he was alert and conscious following the incident, the driver, David Welshman of Riverside, told police he has been using cocaine.
