1.    What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

The biggest political issue this campaign season is the General Assembly’s vote to implement tolls on Rhode Island’s highways in 2016 and the on-going sense that some elected officials are more interested in their own personal gain than the public interest.  I am proud to have voted against and opposed the tolls, not because I believe that our roads do not need fixing, but because my constituents overwhelming did not support them.  When local voters feels that their elected representatives are not advocating for their local wants and wishes, a real cynicism begins to develop that is destructive to the very foundation of our representative democracy.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

To continue to fix and improve Rhode Island’s economy, we must be committed to improving the state’s educational system from kindergarten to college as well as begin to address local property taxes including the commercial property tax rate and assessment procedure.  We must empower students, with the help of excellent teachers and first class facilities, to excel by demanding high standards and performance over the long and short term.  Finally, we must remain committed to an agreed method of reform and improvement in both areas and stick to it rather than interfere or short circuit the process.

3.     What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

The greatest challenge facing Rhode Island continues to be regaining all of the jobs that were lost during the great recession and the chronic structural budget deficits that have plagued Rhode Island for decades.  In order to address these challenges, the General Assembly, working with the Governor, needs to a adopt a concrete and definitive plan to reduce the structural deficits to zero over a five to seven year period.  That will allow everyone time to adjust to the reality that we must spend within our means while targeting scare resources where they can make the most difference – education, infrastructure improvement, worker re-training, and other quality of life issues.

4.    Why are you running for office?

I am running for office because I continue to believe that Rhode Island needs committed public servants who are interested and willing to ask tough questions, take tough votes, and advocate for reforms that are necessary to improve our state.   I am proud of my record of reform, whether it was pushing for the removal of the master lever, fighting to restore Rhode Island Ethics jurisdiction over General Assembly members, or just helping out a constituent navigate the state’s bureaucracy.  There is still more work to be done, and I am running because I believe I am the best candidate from my District who can get results and move our state forward.

5.    Who is your inspiration?

From a political perspective, I am inspired by politicians like Woodrow Wilson, who as Governor of New Jersey, got elected and immediately challenged and reformed the then corrupt New Jersey political machine and by FDR, who as a young state senator stood up to Albany New York political  machine and pushed for change.   Must of all, I am inspired by the hard working people in my District and throughout the state who go to work every day, return home to be with their families, volunteer at school or little league, and just expect that their government and elected leaders are working as hard as they are to make our state more honest, efficient, and the best place that it can be.
