56th Northeast Amateur Championship Set to Begin at Wannamoisett Country Club
RI State Amateur Champion Davis Chatfield is competing in Northeast AmateurSome of the top amateur golfers in Rhode Island and the country will be at Wannamoisett Country Club in East Providence for the 56th Northeast Amateur Championship.
“The Northeast Amateur is a huge event in the amateur golf world, it is considered one of amateur golf's majors. This year we have one of the strongest fields that we have ever had,” Northeast Amateur Chairman Ben Tuthill told GoLocalProv.
The tournament begins on Wednesday, June 11 with the first tee time set for 8 a.m. The final day of the tournament is on Saturday, June 24 with the leaders teeing off around 11 a.m.
The tournament will feature two Rhode Island amateurs in Warwick’s Brad Valois and Coventry’s Bobby Leopold, as well as, the defending RI State Amateur Champion Davis Chatfield.
"Local golfers are granted exemptions through their play in the local tournaments. This year we have the best of the best playing," Tuthill said.
Valois is coming off a victory at the 2017 Burke Memorial tournament and finished in a tie for 31st at the 2016 Northeast Amateur.
Leopold is coming off a second-place finish at the 2017 Burke Memorial tournament and finished in a tie for 35th at last year’s Northeast Amateur. He also posted victories in the 2016 Rhode Island Mid-Amateur and the 2016 Crane Cup in Florida.
Attleboro’s Davis Chatfield will make his Northeast Amateur debut a year after becoming the youngest player to win the Rhode Island State Amateur. Chatfield, who graduated from Bishop Feehan, will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall.
The man Chatfield beat in the RI State Amateur, Kevin Silva out of New Bedford, will also be in the tournament.
Other Notable Players in Field
This year’s tournament is bringing in some of the top players in the country.
One of the biggest names is University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler.
Scheffler is coming off a U.S. Open appearance in which he finished in a tie for 27th. Prior to that, he finished in a tie for third at the NCAA Tournament.
Brad Dalke is coming off a NCAA national championship win with Oklahoma, where he went 2-1 in the tournament. He made it to the championship match of the 2016 U.s. Amateur.
Sam Burns is ranked as the 12th best amateur in the world out of Louisiana State University. He recently won the Jack Nicklaus Award as the top player in college golf. He finished in a tie for 13th at last year’s Northeast Amateur.

Midville Country Club is a nine hole course that spreads over 2,935 yards, adding up to a par 70, for 18 holes (play the nine holes twice from different tees.)
18 holes with a car at Midville during the week will cost you $59 while walking will cost you #39. .
On the weekend, 18 holes with a cart will cost you $63, while you can walk for $43.
Midville Country Club is located on 100 Lombardi Lane in West Warwick, Rhode Island.
Cranston Country Club opened in 1974 and is an 18 hole course that stretches over 6,636 yards from the back tees, adding up to a par 71. Cranston CC located on 69 Burlingame Rd in Cranston, Rhode Island.
18 Holes with a cart will cost you $59 or you can walk for $41 from Monday to Thursday.
Prices go up slightly on the weekend as 18 holes with a cart will cost you $65 while walking will cost you $47.
Meadow Brook Golf Course is one of the newest and longest public golf courses in Rhode Island, stretching 7400 yards from the back trees, adding up to a par 72. Meadow Brook originally opened in 1929 but since being purchased by the Hendrick Family in 2006, has been completely renovated.
