Brown Basketball Falls 84-55 to #25 Cincinnati in Season Opener

JR Hobbie leads Brown with 12 points
The Brown University Bears opened their 2016-17 season with an 84-55 loss to #25 Cincinnati on Friday Night in Cincinnati. The game was the first game of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Tipoff Tournament.

“I told my guys afterwards that we will learn from every experience and tonight will be no different. There are some positives to take from it and things we need to improve on. Everything that happened tonight, we will take a look at, try to take some things from it and prepare for the next one,” said Brown head coach Mike Martin after the game.

Brown’s Struggles

Brown struggled right from the opening tip.

Much of their struggles were due to the significant size advantage that the Bearcats had. Cincinnati out rebounded Brown 43-23 in the game, scoring 18 second chance points.

The size differential also made a difference in the paint where the Bears were dominated. The Bearcats were able to get what they wanted on nearly every trip, scoring 48 points in the paint.

By comparison, Brown scored only 14 points in the paint. Their lack of success inside turned them into a jump shooting team, and on this night they only shot 31% from the field.

With the size difference, the Bears were able to hang around for the majority of the first half. After falling behind 11-1 in the opening six minutes, a Steven Spieth jumper cut the Bearcats lead to 18-14 with ten minutes left in the half.

The Bears would later trail 27-21 with just over six minutes to play in the half before Cincinnati would close the half on a 16-4 run, taking a 43-25 lead into the locker room.

The Bearcats would come out in the second half and continue their run, scoring the first seven points of the half to take a 50-25 lead.

Cincinnati would cruise to the win in the second half.

Freshmen Make the Start

The Bears started two freshmen in their season opener,  6’6” forward Joshua Howard and 6’1” guard Brandon Anderson.

“It was baptism by fire for them tonight,” Martin added.

Howard, out of Providence Day School in North Carolina, played 28 minutes and poured in eight points and grabbed five rebounds in his first collegiate game.

Anderson, out of Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey, played the fewest minutes, 19, of any of the starters and contributed one point and two assists.

Highly touted freshmen David Erebor and Brandon Charnev did not play in the game.

With two freshmen starting, the odd man out of the Brown starting five was  senior guard JR Hobbie.

The Leaders

Brown was led by Hobbie, who scored 12 points in 21 minutes of action, while Tavon Blackmon grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists to lead the Bears.

Steven Spieth added nine points for Brown.
