Bruins Select Finnish Defenseman Vaakanainen With 18th Pick in NHL Draft

The Boston Bruins selected defenseman Urho Vaakanainen from Finland with the 18th overall pick in Friday night’s NHL Draft in Chicago. 

It was reported prior to the draft that the Bruins were one of several teams interested in trading for Minnesota’s Marco Scandella. 

The Bruins have five draft picks in rounds two through seven which take place on Saturday, June 24.

Urho Vaakenainen 

Vaakanainen had one goal in six games for Team Finland at the World Junior tournament, while only posting two goals and four assists playing for JYP of SM-Liiga for 41 games. 

He spent the 2015-16 season with Blues of SM-Liiga, where he had a goal and five assists in 25 games.
