Cornell RB and Former Hendricken Star Derderian "Excited" for Homecoming Game at Brown

Jake Derderian
Former Bishop Hendricken football star and current Cornell running back Jake Derderian makes his return to Rhode Island on Saturday when the Big Red visit Brown University.

Derderian helped Hendricken win three straight state championships, while rushing for 961 yards in his high school career.

"It's really exciting to come home, obviously, I haven’t played football in Rhode Island in a couple of years so I have a ton of family and friends coming to watch me play. Regarding Hendricken, it was a really great experience, playing there prepared me well. I’m just really excited to come home and have everyone see me play," Derderian told GoLocalProv.

Following his career at Hendricken, Derderian walked on to the Cornell football team, where he is now in his sophomore season.

"I really wasn’t recruited anywhere in Rhode Island, I wasn’t recruited in general out of high school. So I looked at Cornell for academics and found out I could get into the school on my own. So I did that and then was able to walk onto the team," said Derderian.

Cornell head coach David Archer told GoLocal they are "happy to have" Derderian.

"He was on our radar in high school and someone we thought was talented, but he was also someone that was very smart and could get into the school on his own and he did," said Archer.

Derderian With Cornell This Season

After not seeing any playing time as a freshman, Derderian has seen action in four of Cornell’s five games this season.

In total, he has 25 rushes for 99 yards, and four catches for 13 yards.

"Last year, everything moved really fast and I was just trying to get adjusted to everything. This year is easier, I’m closer with the guys, I have more experience, and it's been great. The biggest thing is how much it has changed from last year, it feels completely different," said Derderian, who said that he greatly appreciates that Archer and Running Back Coach Chad Nice gave him an opportunity as a walk-on.

His most productive game to this point came in Cornell’s second game of the season against Sacred Heart in which he rushed 14 times for 55 yards.

"First of all, he is a great kid, he has great vision and has great feet. He also has great hands and can make plays out of the backfield. I think the biggest thing is that he is tough and has really earned the respect of his teammates," said Archer.

Facing Brown

The Big Red come into the game with a record of 2-3 on the season, while Brown comes in with a record of 1-4.

"We know their record might not be that good, but we see on film that they can make plays. I just have to make the most of my opportunities," said Derderian.

The Bears are coming off back-to-back losses to Rhode Island and Princeton. Their only win of the season came against Georgetown.

"Brown has had a heck of a tough schedule, Harvard is very good, Rhode Island is a very good team, they have had a tough, tough schedule. Brown is a really good team, we want to be able to run the ball and Jake is going to be a big part of that," said Archer.

Game time is set for 1 p.m at Brown Stadium.
