GAME ON: The Player - Evan Vergano

Q&A with Evan Vergano, Cumberland HS Lacrosse
What are you looking forward to this season?
At this point in the year I’m just looking forward to our first game. Overall I think I’m mostly looking forward our big rivalry games.
What has been the biggest challenge being a high school athlete?
The hardest part of being a high school athlete is definitely the balance. As an athlete you must find time to do everything necessary, such as family, school work, work and friends, with practice and games every time, its just a struggle to find time for all of it
What is your biggest motivator?
I think the biggest team motivator as well as my own, is our coaches. Especially our head coach Matt Smalley, he still played lacrosse at a premiere level, so he knows what its like to be in our place and makes playing fun while still keeping it serious
Who is your biggest rival?
As a team we actually have multiple rivals, Middletown for our two consecutive meetings in the championship game. With it Lincoln has always been a town rivalry, but I believe our biggest rivalry is Mount St. Charles, just because a lot of kids from Cumberland go to Mount St. Charles so it is naturally a rivalry
What are you working to improve your game?
In addition to our regularly scheduled practices with the team, I also just work on my stick handling, and I always have a lacrosse stick in my hands even just walking around the house.
What is your greatest memory on the field?
My greatest memory is definitely when we won the D3 state championship my sophomore year. Mainly after the final whistle when everybody just started throwing all of their equipment in the air, celebrating
How are you able to balance your schoolwork with practices, games, and training?
Finding a great balance between all of the necessary things. Fortunately because it is my senior year I have a very limited amount of homework.
Where do you see yourself going from here, do you plan to pursue this sport in college?
I definitely see myself going to college, I have yet to decide but it is between University of New Hampshire, Suffolk University, and Plymouth State. I will definitely participate in lacrosse in college but Plymouth State has a D3 team, although UNH and Suffolk only have club teams.
