PC Can't Hold on in 2nd Half

After leading by eight at the half,  the Golden Eagles rallied to take a 40-39 lead on two free throws from Markus Howard with 13:11 to play.

The two teams would trade one-point leads over the next two minutes with Providence taking a one-point lead, 45-44, on an Isaiah Jackson jump shot with 10:40 to play.

From that point, the Golden Eagles would go on a 10-2 run to take a 54-47 lead on an Ed Morrow jump shot with 8:28 to play in the game.

It was Marquette’s biggest lead of the game to that point.

Providence would get back within two on several occasions, the last one coming on a Nate Watson layup and one with five minutes left in the game, making the score 61-59 Marquette.

From there, the Golden Eagles would go on an 11-2 run to take a 72-61 lead on a Sam Hauser three with 2:40 to go in the game.

Providence would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Golden Eagles sealed the 11 point win.

The Friars were led by Watson, who poured in 21 points, while Alpha Diallo added 16 points.

PC’s Dominant First Half

The Friars closed the first half with an eight-point lead, 33-25, after leading by as much as nine points on three different occasions.

Leading 16-14 with 11:57 to play in the half, the Friars went on a 10-3 run sparked by a jump shot from Drew Edwards and a three by Kris Monroe to take a 26-17 lead with 5:10 to play.

The Golden Eagles would cut the Friars lead to seven, 30-23, with 1:41 to play in the half before a Diallo tip-in pushed PC’s lead back to 32-23.

With ten seconds left in the half, Marquette’s Ed Morrow was called for a technical foul, giving Providence a chance to push the lead to double digits.

However, Diallo made only one of two free throws to put PC up 33-25.

In PC’s possession following the technical free throws, Kris Monroe missed a three to close the half.

In the half, the Friars held Marquette to just 28% shooting from the field and dominated the boards.

PC grabbed 27 rebounds, ten of them on the offensive glass, while the Golden Eagles grabbed just 14 rebounds.
