PC Falls to Marquette in Big East Tournament, Friars on the Bubble

The Providence College men’s basketball team lost to Marquette University Friday night in the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.

The final was 79-68.

In the first half, Marquette outshot the Friars from the field 55% to 38%.

Friars trailed 42-31 at the half.

A number of Friars looked tired. Carter and Oduro both had just 7 points in the first half. Ticket Gaines was 0-4 and had no points.

 

Second Half Come Back Falls Short

PC trailed by as many as 17 in the second half but came battling back again and again.

A PC Run fueled by Carter cut the Marquette lead to 7 points, 62-55 with 8 minutes left.

At 4:45, PC cut the lead to 68-65 off two consecutive Carter scores.

It was a brutal night for Oduro and Gaines.

Oduro had just 9 points and 6 turnovers, and Gaines scored just 2 points.

For the second game in a row, Jayden Pierre came alive on offense — he scored 16 points.

At 3:39, Carter hit a free throw to cut the lead to 68-66.

Oduro fouled out at 2:27. Marquette’s Oso Ighodaro made the score 72-66.

With 2 minutes left, the Gaines had a wide-open 3 and missed again — 0-9.

Carter led the Friars with 27 points and added 8 rebounds.

The Friars are now on the bubble. PC is 21-13 on the year.

PC will not now have to wait until Sunday night's selection show to know their fate.
