Red Sox' Betts Wins American League MVP

Boston Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts was named American League MVP on Thursday night.

He received 28 of 30 first-place votes to finish ahead of the Angels’ Mike Trout and Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez.

Betts is the first Red Sox player to win MVP since Dustin Pedroia did it in 2008.

He is also the first American League player ever to win the World Series, the MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards in the same season.

The only National League player to do it was Mike Schmidt in 1980 with the Phillies.

With the Red Sox in 2018, Betts hit .346 with 32 home runs and 30 stolen bases while leading the majors in slugging percentage and leading the American League in extra-base hits.

He finished tied for the major league lead with 129 runs scored while winning a Gold Glove in right field.

Betts led the Red Sox to a franchise record 108 regular season wins and the team’s third straight AL East title.
