Red Sox Bullpen Can't Hold Lead as Sox Fall 6-5 to Detroit

Despite a three-run home run from Pablo Sandoval in the 8th, the Boston Red Sox fell 6-5 to the Detroit Tigers on Friday afternoon at Comerica Park in Detroit. 

The Red Sox drop to 2-1 on the season.

The Red Sox trailed 4-0 in the 8th inning before scoring 5 runs, capped off by a Sandoval three run home run to give Boston a 5-4 lead. 

In the bottom of the inning, Red Sox reliever Heath Hembree had two outs in the inning, both on strikeouts, before running into trouble. 

Hembree walked Victor Martinez and Justin Upton before being taken out of the game and replaced by Robby Scott. 

Scott gave up a double to Mikie Mahtook scoring Upton to tie the game. Scott was then replaced by Joe Kelly on the mound. 

Kelly proceeded to walk Jacoby Jones with the bases loaded scoring Upton to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead. 

In Boston’s final at-bat, they would have two men on base with two out before Chris Young would end the game on a pop out. 

Hembree takes the loss for Boston. 

Red Sox starter Steven Wright went 6.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. 

Series Continues 

The Red Sox will play game 2 of their series with Detroit on Saturday, April 8. 

The game will feature the pitching matchup of Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez against Detroit’s Jordan Zimmermann. 

First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m.
