Red Sox Fall 2-1 to Orioles, AL East Lead Cut to 2.5 Games

Boston Red Sox pitcher Doug Fister gave up two runs in the first inning, but the Red Sox were unable to recover as they fell 2-1 to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday at Fenway Park.

The Orioles sweep the series, but remain 2 games out of a playoff spot.

The loss drops the Red Sox to 73-57 on the season.

Their AL East lead is down to 2.5 games over the New York Yankees.

The closest the division race has been since August 3.

Early Runs Enough for Baltimore

Baltimore’s Adam Jones and Trey Mancini hit back-to-back RBI doubles off Doug Fister in the top of the first inning to put the Orioles up 2-0.

Boston's Rafael Devers hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th to score Xander Bogaerts and cut Baltimore’s lead to 2-1.

The Red Sox would not have a hit the rest of the way.

The Red Sox return to action on Monday, August 28 against the Toronto Blue Jays at 7 p.m.

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Drew Pomeranz against Toronto’s Marcus Stroman.
