Rhode Island College Announces Spring Sports MVP's at Annual Banquet

Rhode Island College held their annual spring banquet at the Quonset Point Officer's Club on Monday night. During the banquet, each team named their most valuable player for the 2016 spring season.

BASEBALL

Senior pitcher Dylan Pingitore (Johnston, RI) was named the baseball team’s MVP. Pingitore has appeared in eight games for RIC, starting all of them. He holds a 2-4 record with 3.29 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 52.0 innings of work. He has three complete games on the season.

 

SOFTBALL

 

Freshman shortstop Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, RI) was named the softball team’s MVP. Burgess played in 22 games, starting 20 of them. For the season, she batted .361 (22-for-61) with 22 hits, four doubles, five triples, 12 runs scored, 11 RBI and three walks. She posted a .590 slugging percentage and a .400 on-base percentage to go along with a .988 fielding percentage.

 

MEN’S GOLF

 

Senior Jonathan Cooper (Berkley, MA) was named the men’s golf team’s MVP. Cooper helped the golf team win its fifth straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship and finished second as an individual last fall. He also earned All-New England honors and helped the Anchormen finish first at the NEIGA Div. III Championships by finishing first at the event (110 competitors). Cooper has seen action in 11 competitions and is averaging a score of 76.4. He has shot a season-low score of 72 twice, first in the opening round at the Williams Invitational on Sept. 12 and again on the first day of the Johnson & Wales Wildcats Spring Invitational on April 16. He has been the medalist at two invitationals this season.

 

MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

 

Sophomore Matthew Charles (North Providence, RI) was named the men’s outdoor track & field team’s MVP. Charles recently competed at the N.E. Alliance Championships where he placed 15th in the 200m (23.70), 17th in the 100m (11.70) and 23rd in the long jump (5.07m), while also competing as a member of the seventh place 4x100m relay (43.89) and the eighth place 4x400m relay (3:28.86). He also finished third in the 200m (22.29), sixth in the 100m (11.07) and 11th in the long jump (5.91m), while also competing as a member of the seventh place 4x400m relay (3:30.32) and the 10th place 4x100m relay (46.44), at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16.

 

WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

 

Senior Autumn Wosencroft (Newport, RI) was named the women’s outdoor track & field team’s MVP. Wosencroft recently competed at the N.E. Alliance Championships where she earned a pair of N.E. Alliance honors, finishing third in the 200m (25.82) and fourth in the 400m (57.87), while also finishing seventh in the long jump (5.15m) and competing as a member of the fifth place 4x100m relay (49.11). She also finished first in the 200m (25.40) and first in the 400m (57.95), while also competing as a member of the first place 4x100m (50.17) and the 4x400m relays at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16.

 

MEN’S TENNIS

 

Freshman Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, RI) was named the men’s tennis team’s MVP. Gambardella owns 12-3 singles record and a 6-9 doubles mark for 15.0 points on the season. Gambardella is 3-0 at No. 5 singles, 9-3 at No. 6 singles and 6-0 in Little East Conference contests. He is currently 6-9 (2-4 LEC) at primarily No. 2 doubles. He has won his last 10 singles matches to help the Anchormen to their second consecutive LEC playoff berth.

 

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

 

Sophomore defender Alasondra Apici (Providence, RI) started all 14 games for the Anchorwomen on the back line. She tallied one goal (first career goal) for one point on the season. Apici registered 49 ground balls, 14 draw controls and 24 caused turnovers.
