URI Football Visits #15 Delaware to Open 2018-19 Season

URI Football opens the season against Delaware.
The URI Rams football team opens their 2018-19 football season on Thursday night when they visit the #15 Delaware Blue Hens.

Rhode Island has not won their season opener since 2009.

"We have guys here who are ready to go out there and compete; guys who have themselves ready and in good positions. They are capable, they know what they are doing and they are coached well. There is a sense of team that we haven't really captured up to this point in the last four-plus years. When we go out against Delaware, it's going to be a matter of executing at a high level, and when you have the chance, make the plays,” URI head coach Jim Fleming said following a team scrimmage earlier this week.

The Rams are coming off their 2017-18 campaign in which they went 3-8 overall.

URI vs Delaware

Thursday’s game will be the 32nd all-time meeting between URI and Delaware and the eighth meeting in a season opener.

Delaware leads the series 22-9

URI Offense

Offensively, URI will be led by senior quarterbacks Tyler Harris and JaJuan Lawson and wide receiver Aaron Parker.

Harris enters this season after appearing in eight games last season and making six starts.

He finished the year with 107 completions for 1,375 yards and 13 touchdown passes.

Lawson made five starts at quarterback and appeared in 11 games.

He finished the season with 105 competitions for 1,198 yards and seven touchdowns.

"I'm hoping we can stay healthy all the way through the year at the position, but it gives you comfort when you feel you have three guys who can go in the game and help you win. Redshirt freshman Jahkari Grant is a very good quarterback waiting in the wings as well. There is going to have to be some management of disappointment, but the challenge for the backups is to be ready at any time. I believe all of those guys will do that,” Fleming said.

Parker enters his junior season having caught at least one pass in each of his previous 18 games.

Last season, Parker led URI with 51 catches, making him the first Ram to catch 50 in a season since Robbie Jackson did it in 2013.

He caught a touchdown pass in the first seven games of the season, and in nine straight games overall, setting a new program record. His 823 receiving yards were the ninth highest single-season total in team history.

He was named to the Phil Steele Preseason CAA Football All-Conference Team.

URI Defense

On defense, the Rams will be led by senior defensive end Tez Wilson.

Wilson enters the year with 24.5 tackles for a loss in his career and needs just five to tie Miguel Viera and Jose Duncan for 10th most in program history.

Helping Wilson lead the defense will be junior defensive tackle Brandon Ginnetti.

Last season, Ginnetti started all 11 games and his team-high 7.0 sacks ranked him fifth among all players in the conference in 2017. He also had 37 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss.

Both he and Wilson were named to the Phil Steele  Preseason CAA Football All-Conference Team.
