URI Football Wraps Up 3-Game Road Trip at Maine on Saturday

Harold Cooper
The University of Rhode Island football team (1-4) returns to action following a bye last week when they visit (1-3 ) Maine on Saturday afternoon.

This is URI’s third straight home game after losing to New Hampshire and Brown in the last two.

"Maine is struggling as well in conference, both teams looking for first conference win of the season. This has been a good rivalry for URI, it is the oldest rivalry in the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) and we have a good chance," said URI radio play-by-play man Steve McDonald.

URI vs Maine

Saturday’s game will be the 96th all-time meeting between the two programs, with the first ever meeting coming in 1911.

URI is 34-58-3 all-time against Maine and has not won a game in the series since 2006.

The last time the Rams beat Maine on the road was in 1998.

URI Offense

The Rams’ offense enters the contest averaging 19 points and 369 total yards per game.

"Maine has a good defense, the black hole defense they call it. They limited Villanova to 250 yards of offense, even though Villanova scored 31 points, they got them on different things like a pick six and stuff like that so this will really test our offense to see where we stand. URI has a good offense, but hasn’t produced the wins," McDonald said.

Quarterback Tyler Harris has completed 98 of his 176 passes for 1,259 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. However, he has also thrown 11 interceptions.

A key for the Rams offense will be running back Harold Cooper.

Running back Harold Cooper continues to be the key for the Rams offense. Through five games, he has 351 rushing yards which is enough for fifth most in the conference.

For the receivers, Aaron Parker has a receiving touchdown in seven straight games for URI dating back to last season A touchdown catch against Maine would give him the program record.

"This receiving core is as good, probably the best receiving core they have had in 24 years since, at least since I have been doing the games. I can’t remember a group like this, I mean they are really good and Parker is the best of the bunch. He is only a sophomore, he has a lot of time to play for URI, he is an all-CAA player, one of the best receivers in the league right now," said McDonald.

URI Defense

The Rams defense gives up an average 25.4 points and 415 total yards per game.

They enter the game having forced eight fumbles so far this season, third-most in the country. Their 11 takeaways is sixth best in the conference.

Sophomore Momodou Mbye leads URI with four pass breakups on the season, while defensive tackle Jose Duncan leads Rhode Island with four sacks and two forced fumbles.

Linebacker Justin Hogan and defensive back D.J. Stewart lead URI with 43 tackles.
