Brown, URI Football Set for 102nd Governor's Cup Game - Under the Lights

Brown and URI set to meet for 102nd time
The Brown and University of Rhode Island (URI) football programs renew their rivalry on Saturday night when they meet for the 102nd Governor’s Cup game at Brown Stadium.

Brown leads the all-time series 72-27-2, but URI won last season’s game 28-13 at Meade Stadium.

“This is a great rivalry. I’ve been a part of 24 of them. Now I’ve been a part of a state rivalry on the other side of a scholarship school with New Hampshire, played there back in the 70s and also coached there. So I saw it from a coaches side, I saw it from a players side and now I see it from the other side here at Brown after 24 years,” Brown head coach Phil Estes said during his Governor’s Cup press conference.

URI head coach Jim Fleming added, “One of the things that is extremely significant is that most football games, there is a win or a loss and there is nothing to take home. In this game, there is something tangible and that's the cup.”

Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.

Brown

The Bears enter the game with a record of 1-1 following a 45-28 loss to Harvard in their Ivy League opener last Saturday.

The Bears trailed Harvard 45-9 midway through the fourth quarter.

“I’ve never been angrier in my life. I’m sick and tired of the losses to Harvard and it puts a bad taste in my mouth. I just want you to know that that’s not Brown football. Brown football is a physical football team and if there is one thing that is going to happen on Saturday you're gonna see it laid out right there. We are playing football and we are going to play Brown style football. Just as we always have,” Estes said.

Brown Offense

The Bears offense averages 28 points and 337 yards per game through two games this season.

They are led by quarterback Nicholas Duncan, who has completed 28 of 52 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown this season. However, he has thrown three interceptions.

Livingstone Harriott leads the Brown running attack with 19 rushes for 60 yards while Jakob Prall has been Brown’s top receiver, hauling in 16 catches for 155 yards.

Brown Defense

The Brown defense has given up 34 points and 453 total yards per game this season.

The defense is led by senior defensive end Richard Jarvis leads the country by averaging two sacks per game, while his 2.8 tackles for loss per game is second in the country.

URI

Harold Cooper
The URI Rams enter the game with an overall record of 1-3 following last week’s 28-14 loss to #15 New Hampshire.

“Regardless of what has happened in the lead-up to this game, anything is possible in a rivalry game. We have put a lot into our preparation, we are looking forward to playing a quality opponent,” said Fleming.

URI Offense

The Rams’ offense enters the contest averaging 19 points and 369 total yards per game.

Quarterback Tyler Harris has completed 70 of his 130 passes for 961 yards and six touchdowns on the season. However, he has also thrown 11 interceptions.

A key for the Rams offense will be running back Harold Cooper.

Cooper has piled up 557 all-purpose yards (185.7 per game) in three games against Brown for his career. In two of those games, he has had at least 100 rushing yards.

For the receivers, Aaron Parker has a receiving touchdown in six straight games for URI after his 75-yard touchdown catch last week against New Hampshire.

He has seven touchdown catches in his last eight games.

URI Defense

The Rams defense gives up an average 25.8 points and 417 total yards per game.

Sophomore Momodou Mbye leads URI with four pass breakups on the season, while defensive tackle Jose Duncan leads Rhode Island with four sacks.
