MAE Organization for the Homeless announces the appointment of Marlene Guay as its new long-term Director, effective January 2026, marking an important leadership transition for the organization.

 

“This transition marks an important milestone for MAE,” said Ana Isabel dos Reis‑Couto, Board President. “Over the past year, Tuni’s leadership strengthened the organization at a pivotal time, creating the structure and clarity needed for long‑term success. We are excited to welcome Marlene as our new Director and confident in her ability to lead MAE into its next chapter with intention, collaboration, and vision.”

Schartner joined MAE in January 2025 as Interim Executive Director during a period of rapid growth and organizational transition. Over the past year, she worked closely with the Board, staff, volunteers, and community partners to stabilize, restructure, and strengthen MAE’s internal operations, governance, and program delivery.

 

During this time, MAE focused on building sustainable systems to support its expanding pantry, outreach, and basic needs programs, strengthening volunteer coordination, improving operational infrastructure, and preparing the organization for long-term executive leadership.

 

“As MAE’s founder, I carry deep gratitude in my heart,”shared MAE’s founder, Martinha Javid. “It has been incredibly meaningful to witness the organization’s growth and evolution over the years, shaped by each Director we have had the privilege of working alongside. As we step into a new year, I am truly delighted to welcome Marlene as our new Director of Programs. I look forward to supporting her in this role as MAE continues to fulfill its purpose, serving each individual with love, inclusion, faith, and empowerment which are the pillars of MAE in our community.”

 

Guay brings extensive experience in organizational leadership, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative visioning. Her background includes convening diverse groups, guiding organizations through alignment and change, and building strong foundations for long-term impact.

 

“I am honored to step into this role at such an important moment for MAE,” said Marlene Guay, Director. “The work done over the past year has created a strong foundation, and I’m excited to partner with the Board, volunteers, staff, and community to build on that momentum. Together, we’ll focus on strengthening governance, clarifying our mission and vision, and shaping a thoughtful, sustainable strategy for MAE’s future.”

 

Schartner will conclude her role on Friday, January 16th.“It has been a privilege to serve MAE during this important chapter,” said Tuni Schartner, Interim Executive Director. “Over the past year, the organization has done the hard work of stabilizing and strengthening its systems so it can grow with intention. Marlene is a wonderful fit for MAE’s next phase, and I’m confident in her leadership as the organization moves forward.”

 

With this transition, MAE enters 2026 well-positioned to deepen its impact, strengthen governance, and pursue long-term strategic planning while continuing to meet the urgent needs of individuals and families experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity across Rhode Island.
