RI Loses Jobs for 4th Time in Last 5 Months

RI sees job losses again in December
Rhode Island lost 600 jobs in the month of December, marking the fourth time in the last five months that the state has lost jobs. 

According to the RI Department of Labor and Training, estimated nonfarm payroll in Rhode Island totaled 497,300 in December, down 600 from the November number of 497,900.

The number of employed RI residents was 530,300, a decrease of 500 from the November figure of 530,800. Over the year, the number of employed RI residents was up 7,000 from December of 2016 (523,300).

The RI labor force totaled 554,900 in December of 2017, up 100 from November 2017 and up 4,300 from December 2016

Over the year, the Rhode Island economy is up 6,000 jobs.

Governor Gina Raimondo defended the trends. "This report shows that we are in the third inning of our economic comeback. In the last 12 months, Rhode Island has added 2,000 jobs in manufacturing and 2,100 jobs in construction. Rhode Island set new records for job count eight times last year, but we need to keep going with our commitment to job training to ensure that every Rhode Islander can keep up and get ahead."

Unemployment Increases to 4.4%

According to the RI Department of Labor and Training, the unemployment rate for December 2017 was 4.4%, up one-tenth of a percentage point from the November rate.

Over the year, the unemployment rate is down half of a percentage point from the December 2016 rate of 4.9 percent.

The number of unemployed RI residents was 24,500, up 500 from the November number of 24,000. Over the year, the number of unemployed dropped by 2,800.

 A total of 10,463 individuals collected Unemployment Insurance benefits in December 2017, down from 10,898 a year ago.

This month, Unemployment Insurance claimants accounted for 44.4 percent of the total unemployed.

Across the country, the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1% in December of 2017, unchanged from the previous month.
