U.S. Unemployment Rate Falls to Lowest Since 1969, Economy Adds 136K Jobs in September

The U.S. Unemployment rate dropped to a 50-year low during the month of September, while the country added just 136,000 jobs in the month, announced the U.S. Department of Labor on Friday.

The unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points to 3.5%, the lowest rate since 1969.

“Breaking news: unemployment rate at 3.5%, drops to a 50 year low. Wow America, let's impeach your President (even though he did nothing wrong),” wrote President Donald Trump in a tweet on Friday morning.

U.S. Adds Jobs

The U.S. added 136,000 jobs in the month of September, after adding just 130,000 in August.

According to the Department of Labor, the labor force participation rate remained at 63,2%, while average hourly earnings rose to 2.9 percent over the past year to $28.09.

Education and healthcare providers added 40,000 jobs, while the government gained 22,000 jobs in the month.

The retail industry lost 11,000 jobs, while the manufacturing industry dropped 2,000 jobs.
