MA Unemployment Rate Nearly a Full Point Lower Than RI at 3.5%

MA Unemployment rate is 3.5%
The unemployment rate in Massachusetts is nearly a full point lower than the unemployment rate in Rhode Island for the month of May.

According to MA’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, MA’s unemployment rate is 3.5%, while Rhode Island’s unemployment rate is 4.4%.

“The Massachusetts unemployment rate held at 3.5% for the eighth consecutive month. In addition, estimates indicate the Commonwealth gained 56,100 jobs over the year and the labor force grew by 71,600, signs of the steady strength of the economy in the Commonwealth,” said Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Rosalin Acosta.

MA’s May unemployment rate was three-tenths of a percentage point lower than the national rate of 3.8%, reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Since May of 2017, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased three-tenths of a percentage point from 3.8%.

RI’s unemployment rate since May of 2017 stayed at 4.4%.

MA Adds More Jobs

While Rhode Island added 1,200 jobs in May, Massachusetts added 6,200 jobs during the month.

The MA labor force increased by 27,500 from 3,704,700 in April, as 26,500 more residents were employed and 1,000 more residents were unemployed over the month.

Since May of 2017, Massachusetts has added 56,100 jobs.
