Ghiorse: Forecast on the First Storm of the Season

It has been a "quiet" winter weatherwise so far here in Rhode Island and most of Southern New England, but all of that is about to change ... and how! We are looking at a snow-to-rain-to-snow situation tonight and tomorrow and a massive, powerful rain and wind storm likely next week around mid-week with a repeat performance early in the weekend.

The storm tonight and tomorrow should feature the familiar snow-to-rain-to-snow routine in Providence and areas south and east into Southeastern Massachusetts with mostly all snow north and west of Providence into Central Massachusetts and the Boston suburbs. Kickback snow as the storm intensifies and moves away tomorrow could add more snow cover over much of Southeastern Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island and a flash freeze will likely cover the whole area as the storm pulls away. Up to and around a foot of snow is likely in areas where there is no changeover or mix with sleet and rain.
Additionally, a very powerful storm will emerge from the center of the country next week that will track to our west putting us on the "warm" side of the storm. The result ... heavy, windswept rain and all that entails ... potential flooding, possible power outages ... etc. followed by a bitter-cold air blast.
Of course, it is far too early to forecast any details ... just stay tuned to the latest forecasts. If that's not all ... the longer-range forecast models are showing for a repeat of the mid-week action early next weekend.
So, winter storm weather is finally emerging from the doldrums of December. Stay safe and keep up with the latest forecasts.
