Ground Zero: One Providence Location, 11 Assaults in 23 days

Kennedy Plaza is between Providence City Hall and the U.S. Federal Court House. Between July 1 and 23, there were eleven assaults at Kennedy Plaza, including one that took place directly across the street next to City Hall.

Based on the data provided by the City of Providence to GoLocal after an Access to Public Records Act request, Kennedy Plaza continues to be the epicenter of city crime.
Over the past two weeks, GoLocal visited Kennedy Plaza on ten occasions, and despite the crime, no Providence Police officer was seen on-site at any time. None.
What could be seen was open drug dealing and an ever-growing number of homeless individuals. And, the new location for gathering is the gateway to the BankNewport City Center facility located at 2 Kennedy Plaza. The Skating Center is under construction. The entrance area of the Skating Center is now a meeting place.

Nearly 150 Assaults, Sexual Assaults, and Shootings in 23 Days in Providence
While the crimes were spread out across the city, no place saw the number of crimes like Kennedy Plaza.
The following pages, provided to GoLocal by the city of Providence, list the assaults during the first 23 days of July.



None of the reported shootings during the July 1-23 took place in the Kennedy Plaza area. The City has not released the location of the 18 sexual assaults which took place during this 23-day period.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, "Violent victimization" is defined as:
Rape/sexual assault, personal robbery, aggravated assault, or simple assault. Includes attempted and completed crimes. Excludes personal theft/larceny. Murder is not measured by the NCVS because of an inability to question the victim. Violent victimizations measure crimes against persons. Each time a person is affected by a violent crime, it is counted as a single victimization.
