A man told police he was assaulted and robbed by a group of individuals in Providence overnight.

About Incident

Early Friday morning, police responded to Rhode Island Hospital for a report of a victim of an assault.

The victim -- a male in his late-30s -- said he had been walking on Friendship Street when five men came up to him and demanded his belongings.

One of the suspects hit him in the face with an unknown object; he said he was shoved to the ground and kicked by members of the group.

The victim said he was robbed of his sneakers as well as the cash and credit cards he had on him.

He was treated for several lacerations to his face.
