The crash was first reported on Thursday night.

At approximately 3:40 PM, Troopers from the Scituate Barracks responded to calls for a single motor vehicle crash on Route 295 South, south of Plainfield Pike, in the City of Cranston.

Witnesses to the crash stated that a Honda Accord, traveling in the high-speed lane, was forced off the roadway by another vehicle.  The vehicle that was forced off the highway then entered the center median, where it struck a tree.

The operator of the Honda — the vehicle that crashed — was identified as Casey Bassignani, age 23, of Johnston, and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Cranston Rescue, where she was pronounced deceased.

The operator of the second vehicle involved, identified as Juan Archila, age 43 of Providence, was later located and taken into custody without incident. Archila was charged with Driving to Endanger – Death Resulting, held overnight, and arraigned before a Justice of the Peace on Thursday morning. He was held on $50,000 surety bail at the ACI.

Archila is scheduled for a bail review hearing in Third District Court on Friday, November 28th.
