Woman Shot and Killed in Providence Overnight; Gunman Barricaded in House Now Firing Shots

A woman was shot and killed in Providence overnight.

In a separate incident -- police were on the scene before 5 AM negotiating with a gunman who had barricaded himself in a house. 

At 6:30 AM, police reported the gunman was firing shots inside the house.

About Homicide

The homicide — the city’s second of the year — occurred on Harold Street in Mt. Pleasant.

According to police, it occurred shortly before midnight. 

A woman was killed; police believe it may have been a domestic incident. 

Police are currently investigating and are not releasing additional information at this time. 

 

Gunman in Home 

On Thursday morning, police said that they had a report of a gunman in a house approximately two miles away. 

Police said the two incidents do not appear to be related. 

“We have a lone gunman inside 25 Denison St. SRU is on scene negotiating,” Providence Police Tweeted at 5 AM. “No one has been injured.”

The house is located off Branch Avenue — just blocks from Esek Hopkins Middle School. 

“Avoid the area, expect delays. People in the immediate area are to shelter in place,” Providence Police continued in their statement. 

At approximately 6:30 AM, police said the gunman was shooting. 

"Update: multiple shots are being fired from inside 25 Denison St. Everyone must continue to shelter in place. The surrounding area is in lockdown."
