The RI labor force totaled 556,600 in January, up 300 from December of 2017 and up 3,700 from January of 2017.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung's campaign released the following statement regarding the unemployment numbers.

“Governor Raimondo claims things are getting better, but this report clearly shows that under her leadership the Rhode Island economy has completely stagnated.  Per the RI DLT, the unemployment rate has only ticked down 0.1% over the past year, and now another two hundred jobs have been lost in January. Rhode Islanders have had enough of families needing to leave the state to find good paying jobs.  That’s why they are ready for the type of leadership Mayor Fung has shown in growing Cranston’s economy, as the WPRI poll earlier this week demonstrated.” - Andrew Vargas Vila, campaign manager.

Raimondo defended her record, "Rhode Island has come a long way since 2014 when the state's unemployment rate was the highest in America. Today, it's in line with the national average and there are more jobs in Rhode Island than at nearly any other time. Starting in 2015, we totally revamped our approach to economic development and job training. Our approach is working: We've cut our unemployment rate by one-third and 22 companies have moved here or expanded here, and they're hiring thousands of Rhode Islanders."

Unemployment Rate Remains Same

Rhode Island’s unemployment rate remained at 4.5% in January, unchanged from the revised December number.

Over the year, the unemployment rate is down one-tenth of a percentage point from the January 2017 rate of 4.6 percent.

The number of unemployed RI residents was 25,100, unchanged from December. Over the year, the number of unemployed dropped by 300.

Across the country, the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in January of 2018, unchanged from the previous month and down seven-tenths of a percentage point over the year.
