August Job Numbers - No Growth in RI

RI based jobs saw no growth in the month of August
Rhode Island-based jobs saw no growth in the month of August while the unemployment rate also stayed at 4.3 percent, announced the RI Department of Labor and Training on Thursday. The jobs numbers do not include the hit the RI economy will take for the loss of jobs due to the closing of 31 Benny's stores and Alexion shutting down its facility in RI and laying off 250 high paying pharma jobs.

Rhode Island jobs stayed at the July number of 499,700.

Overall, the number of jobs in Rhode Island is up 9,300 from a year ago.

Unemployment in RI

The number of unemployed RI residents was 23,700, down 500 from the July number of 24,200.

Over the year, the number of unemployed dropped by 5,800.

The number of employed RI residents was 532,700, down 100 from the July number of 532,800.

Over the year, the number of employed RI residents was up 9,700 from August of 2016.

The RI labor force totaled 556,400 in August of 2017, down 600 from July of 2017 and up 3,900 from August of 2016.

Unemployment Across the Country

The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in August of 2017, up one-tenth of a percentage point from the previous month and down half of a percentage point over the year.
