Barrington’s Matt DeWolf is one of six recruits joining the Brown men’s basketball team for the 2017-18 season, Brown head coach Mike Martin announced on Thursday.

DeWolf is a 6’9” forward from Northfield Mount Herman where he averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game as a senior.

"Matt comes from Northfield Mount Hermon, one of the best prep school programs in the country, and is well prepared to impact our team because of it. He's really developed into a strong, physical, and highly competitive frontcourt player.  He brings great size and strength, which will allow him to be strong interior defender and rebounder. He's also a good low post scorer and has the ability to play at the high post and handle the ball on the perimeter, great qualities for a front court player in our system,” said Martin.

DeWolf played at Barrington High School from 2013-2015, leading the Eagles to a 32-2 overall record.

Brown’s 2017-18 Recruiting Class

Including DeWolf, the Bears will bring in five freshmen and a sophomore for the 2017-18 season.

"Our coaching staff is extremely excited about this incoming class. We feel as though they each possess the abilities necessary to have a positive impact on our program throughout their careers at Brown. They will each have the opportunity to earn their playing time and we feel this group will blend nicely with our returning players,” said Martin.

Of the six players, four of them are guards and two are forwards.

The Players

Desmond Cambridge

Cambridge is a 6’4” freshman guard from Nashville, Tennessee.

He comes to Brown out of the Hun School of Princeton, where he averaged 17 points and 5 rebounds per game as a senior.

"Desmond has an impressive combination of athletic ability, basketball skills, and a competitive fire that we think will allow him to make a significant contribution to our program. He's a very good shooter, both from 3-point range and from the mid-range, and is an explosive finisher at the rim. He also has very good size and length, giving him the potential to be an outstanding defender and rebounder at the guard position,” said Martin.

Tamenang Choh

Choh is a 6’5” freshman forward out of Brooks High School in Lowell, Massachusetts.

At Brooks, he led the team to a 25-0 record and was named MVP of the NEPSAC Class B Championship.

"T is a versatile forward, who brings terrific size, length, and athleticism to our front court. He will be able to rebound, defend, and finish high above the rim. He also possesses the ability to handle the ball on the perimeter and is a very good passer.  He hasn't lost a game in well over a calendar year as his AAU team (Mass Rivals) went undefeated on the Adidas circuit last summer and his Brooks team went undefeated and won the New England Prep School Class B Championship this past winter,” said Martin.

Zach Hunsaker

Hunsaker, a 6'2" sophomore guard, comes to Brown after transferring from Snow College in Orem, Utah where he was a first-team junior college All-American.

At Snow, he led the SWAC by averaging 20 points per game, including a conference-best 92 three-pointers. He also led the league in free throw percentage, knocking down 83 percent of his shots.

"Zach is a really skilled guard who possesses a high basketball IQ and a terrific will to win. Being named First Team Division I NJCAA All-American and Player of the Year in the Scenic West Athletic Conference are tremendous accomplishments.  He is going to have a chance to make a large and immediate impact on our team, as he can really score the basketball and also is very comfortable running a team,” Martin said.

George Mawanda-Kalema

Mawanda-Kalema is a 6’3” guard from Episcopal High School in Burke, Virginia.

He averaged 20 points and 4.6 rebounds per game to go along with 2.5 assists.

"George comes to Brown fresh off a fantastic career at Episcopal, a terrific basketball program in the IAC, which is a very good private school league in the Washington DC area. He has good length and quickness, can handle the ball, and should be a good perimeter defender. Above all else, George is a scorer. He's a lethal 3-point shooter with deep range, he can shoot it off the bounce, and just has a knack for scoring,” Martin said.

Jake Shaper

Shaper is a 6’3” guard out of the Kinkaid School in Houston, Texas where he was a three-year All-Conference player.

"Jake comes to us from Kinkaid High School in Houston, TX and from another really good high school program. He's a highly competitive young man and very capable of scoring the ball from the perimeter or in the paint. He possesses a strong work ethic and plays the game with a relentless approach.  He has good size on the wing and will add a physical presence to our unit,” Martin said.

Brown in 2017-18

The Bears went 13-17 overall last season and 4-10 in the Ivy League.

They lose three starters to graduation off of last year’s team in forward Steven Spieth and guards Tavon Blackmon and JR Hobbie.
